What is the danger?

  • Complete breakage of brake pedal: In case of severe corrosion, the brake pedal bracket may come loose from its place or break completely.
  • Brake failure: In this situation, the driver is completely unable to press the brake pedal.
  • High risk of accident: Sudden failure of brakes increases the risk of serious and fatal accidents manifold. It poses a grave danger to the driver, passengers and other people on the road.

  • Free Repair: Honda Motor Company will inspect and repair or replace the brake pedal bracket for all vehicles affected by the recall free of charge.
  • Notification: Owners of affected vehicles will be sent official letters (mailer notices) by mail starting at the end of August 2024.

What should you do? (Important Steps)

1.Check your VIN number: Find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). It’s usually on the bottom corner (outside) of the driver’s side windshield, on the driver’s side door frame, or on the registration papers.

2.Check Status Online:

  • Honda owners: Go to https://owners.honda.com/service-maintenance/recalls and enter your VIN.
  • Acura owners: Go to https://owners.acura.com/service-maintenance/recalls and enter your VIN.
  • You can also check all pending recalls by visiting the NHTSA website: https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls and entering your VIN.

3.Wait for the notice, but be cautious: Though the official letters are yet to start arriving, if your vehicle appears in the above list, take precautions immediately.

4.Contact your dealer: After checking the VIN, if your vehicle is on the recall list, contact your nearest authorized Honda or Acura dealership. They will have complete information about the recall and will advise you on the next steps (inspection/repair appointment). This service is absolutely free of charge.

5.URGENT CAUTION: If you hear any unusual noise (such as squeaking, knocking) from the brake pedal area or feel any looseness in the brake pedal, stop driving immediately and call the dealer or towing service.

Special note for Indian owners:

  • The number of affected vehicles in India may be relatively low, as these were primarily imported (CBU) vehicles.
  • Still, if you or someone you know drives a MY 2004-2008 Honda Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline or Acura MDX, RL, do a VIN check.
  • Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) or Acura India cannot directly announce this recall, as these vehicles were not sold in India through them. The onus of repair will be on the local authorized dealership or Honda’s import division.
  • In India too, owners of the affected vehicle should get their vehicle repaired free of cost, as this is a global safety recall. Do confirm with the local dealer.

Summary:

This Honda-Acura brake pedal recall is not a minor defect but a serious life-saving safety issue. If you or anyone you know drives a Honda or Acura car of the above model and year, check your VIN number immediately and contact the dealer immediately when you receive an official notice. It is wise to remove this hazard in time before a terrible accident occurs. Safety of yourself and others on the road is of paramount importance.Click here for information.
